Matt Has an E-Mail of Note

December 22, 2000

A Stanbury teenager's musical efforts struck a chord with the organisers of a festive jingle competition. Matthew Schofield, 16, has received a framed certificate and J75 in vouchers after finishing runner-up in the contest.

School children throughout Yorkshire were invited by Doncaster-based web design company Isle Communications to compose a greeting for use in the company's first-ever electronic Christmas card, to be e-mailed to clients all over the world.

Matthew - with fellow prizewinner Philip Sherrard, 15, a Year 11 colleague at Bradford Grammar School - used computerised mixing and recording equipment to compose a jingle.

They spent three days developing and improving the piece, which uses a variety of instrumental sounds from strings and brass instruments to honky tonk piano.

Matthew, who plays piano and trombone, plans to put his vouchers towards a digital recording software package.

Marcus Chipp, managing director of Isle Communications, says: "I am thoroughly impressed with what these youngsters have achieved. We had a tremendous response to the competition, and picking the winners was not easy. Matthew and Philip's piece stood out because of the range and quality of the composition."
