Whitehall Email Warning After Attack on Comedian

January 29, 2001

Radical Channel 4 comedian, Mark Thomas, was called a "prat" and an "out and out nutter" in emails posted by Whitehall civil servants in a concerted smear campaign. Their emails, ordered to be released under the Data Protection Act, have resulted in the civil servants being warned by their bosses to be more cautious. Richard Caborn, one of the Department of Trade and Industry's ministers, apparently instructed officials to dig up dirt to rubbish the comedian. A secret memo refers to DTI mandarin Sir Michael Scholar, who "had tried to find ways to avoid" disclosing the emails to Thomas. The memo will be aired on Thomas's Wednesday Channel 4 programme.
