WALTHAM, Mass.—(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)—Feb. 21, 2001—Terra Lycos (NASDAQ:TRLY), the leading global Internet network, today announced the following information from The Lycos 50(TM), the 50 most popular user searches for the week ending February 17, 2001. The Lycos 50(TM)Top 10 Search Terms for the Week Ending

February 17, 2001

  1. Valentine's Day
  2. Napster
  3. Dragonball
  4. The IRS
  5. Britney Spears
  6. Anna Kournikova
  7. Gnutella
  8. Taxes
  9. Pokemon
  10. Tattoos

Notes of Interest:

The eagerly anticipated Napster ruling from Federal Court, with news that Napster will likely be shut down, sent Web users scrambling for last minute music file-trading, pushing Napster to number two on this week's list. Only the mid-week celebration of Valentine's Day (#1) kept Napster from the top spot. Searches for Napster wannabees sent Napster competitor Gnutella all the way to number seven on the list (up from number 40) while searches like Napster alternatives and programs like Napster also grew significantly. Meanwhile, the other big computer-related story making news headlines this week was the Anna Kournikova e-mail virus, which boosted the tennis star to her highest rank ever on The Lycos 50, hitting number six. The virus itself was so popular online, it made The Lycos 50 at number 33.

Other Notes of Interest:

The Marc Rich pardon scandal appears to be making as many waves online as it is offline, hitting number 46 on this week's list. Fifty-seven percent of the searches for Rich were for socialite Denise Rich. Although the scandals that surround him make the list quite often, ironically, President Clinton has never appeared on The Lycos 50. Not so for "honest Abe." In honor of President's Day, Abraham Lincoln (#44) becomes the second president to ever make The Lycos 50. George W. Bush is the other.

In Case You Were Wondering:

The most-searched members of the cast of Survivor II, The Australian Outback, may come as a surprise. While some news outlets report that Amber Brkich has the most fan sites online, she is only the fourth most-searched Survivor on Lycos. The number one most-searched Survivor is Kimmi Kappenberg, thanks to a topless picture of her floating around the Internet. Here are the top five:

  1. Kimmi Kappenberg
  2. Elisabeth Filarski
  3. Jerri Manthey
  4. Amber Brkich
  5. Kel Gleason
