Yahoo to Begin Charging for E-Mail-by-Phone Service

April 18, 2001

Yahoo Inc. will begin charging a monthly subscription fee on May 7 for Yahoo by Phone. The service, which reads e-mail and other information to people who call an 800 number, will be free until then.

The company said the monthly fee, pricing details of which Yahoo plans to release May 1, is necessary to "offer new features and continued upgrades."

Users should register for the paid service on May 7. Users who choose not to register can continue to use the service free until June 7.

The Yahoo by Phone service provides voice mail and uses prerecorded voices to read e-mail, stock quotes and news to registered users. Registered users can access and reply to e-mail messages by phone.
