Stanford Student Arrested in E-Mail Sting
May 18, 2001
San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a Stanford University student suspected of trying to meet a 10-year-old girl for a sexual encounter.
Investigators say 26-year-old Alexander Simon had been in e-mail contact with the girl, until her father found out. Officers then continued to craft e-mail messages under the girl's log-on identity, using them to arrange a meeting. That's where Simon was arrested.
They say Simon initially met the girl at a Menlo Park school, where he'd been teaching students about bicycle safety.
