New e-mail worm unearthed
August 31, 2001
Central Command Inc., an anti-virus software and computer security services company in Medina, this afternoon warned of a newly discovered e-mail worm that purports to be from Microsoft.
The worm known as Win32.Invalid.A@mm is contained in an e-mail from Microsoft's technical support department, with a subject line of "Invalid SSL Certificate."
The e-mail advises downloading an attached "patch," which then destroys .exe files and extracts all e-mail addresses it can find on the hard drive and forwards the same patch to them.
