Fittler gets 'coward' hate-mail

October 30, 2001

Australian rugby league captain Brad Fittler was sent white feathers after the Kangaroo tour was cancelled earlier this month following the US terrorism attacks, it has been revealed.

White feathers, a sign of cowardice, were sent to men who refused to enlist during the two world wars.

Fittler received the feathers after he came under fire for voting against travelling to the UK for the original six-week tour, The Daily Telegraph reported.

He had to be persuaded by Australian Rugby League officials to take part in the shortened three-week trip.

But Fittler said the people who sent the feathers to him were the real cowards.

"The people who anonymously sent the feathers are the real cowards," Fittler, who will finish his representative career on the tour told the paper.

The 21-man Kangaroo squad has gathered in Sydney for a week on the training paddock before departing for London next Monday.
